Seaweeds of Washington StateA Collection from Dan PenttilaIntroduction |
Dan Penttila is a career biologist working for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Dan is most famous for his ground-breaking research into the life cycles of forage fish (those that a variety of birds, marine mammals and fish feed upon); specifically:
Dan's interests and work qualify him for the traditional title of "naturalist" (in modern terms, "environmental scientist"), and has gathered these seaweeds as a part of his curiosity of nature in general. These web pages offer a partial display of Dan's personal collection. They have been chosen for inclusion because herring tend to prefer these species to affix their spawn, and this page was designed as an aid to fish biologists in identifying the algae. It is not a comprehensive collection of all of the species native to the state's marine waters. With thanks to Dan, we present this collection to you...
